Wicked: For Good (2025)

Well, after finally watching the first film and making enough time, I was able to get myself to the theater and see Wicked: For Good. I think it’s safe to say that it pretty much lived up to my expectations, meaning that, similar to the stage version, I didn’t like nearly as much as the first part. Don’t get me wrong, I had fun and there were some emotional moments for this deadpan critic, but that’s something I’ve always felt with this story. And I think it’s like that for a lot of people, too. That being said, it was still enjoyable, I thought it did a pretty good job of being faithful to the stage production and being a fan of both stage shows and movies, it was a pretty good time. I’ll say this: now that I’ve seen both films, I think I’m even more a fan of the story than I was before. I didn’t think that would ever happen when it came to Wicked but I guess life is just full of surprises. I have more to say about this emotional musical fantasy, so let’s look at the transformation that only friendship can create.

The film continues the journey of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) as their friendship is tested by rising political tensions, shifting loyalties, and the consequences of the choices they made in the first film. As the world of Oz edges toward chaos, each woman must confront who she is and who she is willing to become. This movie had some of what I liked about the first one. The sets and visuals were as beautiful as ever, the acting was pretty good, the songs were both fun and emotional, and it features the same cast, who gave it their all like before. Except now, they cast Colman Domingo as the voice of the Cowardly Lion, which was a pretty cool addition. I also liked how they connected the story of The Wizard of Oz to this one as it progresses throughout. One flaw I need to mention, and I’m sorry to be the picky naysayer that I usually come off as, but I probably could have done without a new song or two that was included. I wouldn’t consider this too big a deal though, because I thought it was a nice way to let their stars shine, and I’m totally okay with that. Just like before, I have to give credit to both Erivo and Grande for their performances here. Their chemistry is as powerful as ever and their friendship is truly something beautiful to witness. I usually don’t think a film is better than the original stage production, and I can’t believe I’m actually admitting this, but I did enjoy this more than the stage version. I guess it has to do with the longer running time of both films and how they used that to improve the story. That’s what I got from this experience.

I may have missed the first film in the theaters but I’m glad that wasn’t the case here, because this felt like something that needed to be seen on the big screen. Again, I didn’t like it as much as the first part but I didn’t expect anything less than that. I can see this film getting Oscar nominations like the original did and it might even get nominated for one of those two new songs that were added. My overall score would be an 8 out of 10. If you’re a fan of the first film, then I would recommend checking this one out when you have time. A dazzling end to a story about courage, friendship, and destiny.
