I have been a Star Wars fan for as long as I can remember. In fact, Star Wars is where my love of movies began. I might be going on an annoying spiel here but what else can you expect from someone like me? I remember when I was 5 years old and I had a VHS tape of A New Hope. I didn’t know what to expect but as soon as I finished watching it, I thought it was one of the coolest things that I had ever seen. It was like being transported to a another world and I fell in love with it instantly. This is also the reason it’s one of my top 10 favorite films. I’ve actually enjoyed most things Star Wars, from the animated shows, some of the live action ones, I’ve always found something riveting about them. I could certainly say the same for The Mandalorian. I’ve had fun watching the show ever since it came out and it’s been both a fun journey and very wholesome to watch the relationship of both Din Djarin and Grogu evolve into a father-son bond. And it was especially a pleasure to go and watch their feature film. Yeah, unlike some buzzkill fanboys who always find something to complain about and are more negative that I can be, I actually had fun watching this on the big screen. I have more to say, so let’s follow the next chapter of this galactic journey.
The story follows Din Djarin and his young companion Grogu as they embark on a new adventure beyond the familiar edges of the galaxy. As old threats resurface and new ones emerge, the pair must rely on their bond and instincts to navigate a dangerous, ever-expanding world. What I will say is that this movie actually felt like two expanded episodes of the show, and I would call this both a positive and a negative. It gave me what I loved about the show but I also don’t think it really offered anything new to the Star Wars saga and made me crave more. Not only that, but it also made the experience feel underwhelming and less cinematic. I feel like I got the same formula that’s more repetitive than my daily routine but I think I can let that slide here. First reason being because I had fun and that always counts for something. Second, the music score is epic as always, thanks to the incredibly talented Ludwig Göransson. Third, the cast is pretty cool, too. It doesn’t just have Pedro Pascal returning as the badass bounty hunter, but it also includes Jeremy Allen White, Sigourney Weaver, Steve Blum, Martin Scorsese, and Jonny Coyne. Fourth, the relationship between the Mandalorian and Grogu has always been a favorite of mine from the show and I loved seeing it in the theater. Plus, it’s always fun to see how cute Grogu is. And sixth, the action was fun and I thought director Jon Favreau crushed it like he normally does. I can’t act like everything in this franchise has been perfect but as a fan of both The Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Mandalorian, this film had what makes Star Wars enjoyable and my nostalgia levels were through the roof. That’s all I can really ask for.
This movie may not have been a masterpiece but it was an awesome experience to witness it on the giant XD screen and it reminded me of the good parts of Star Wars. Overall, I would have to give this movie a 7 out of 10. So, if you’re a fan of anything Star Wars or the shows I mentioned, then I would highly recommend that you drop the pessimistic mindset and go check this film out if you haven’t already. Familiar, but undeniably entertaining.
