When it comes to what I write about, I always poke fun at myself and crack a joke in my reviews, but I wanted to take a more serious approach this time (I also feel like if I did make a joke here, I’d probably be going straight to hell). Even though I watched the original Superman only months ago for the first time, I still thought it was some pretty groundbreaking work and it showed the world what a superhero movie can be. I could also never forget that classic John Williams theme. And in my humble opinion, nobody played the Man of Steel better than Christopher Reeve. It was quite an experience to watch him bring this character to life and he was very good at making both Superman and Clark Kent seem like two very different people. I’ve known about what happened to Christopher Reeve for years and it is still one of the saddest stories I’ve ever heard. But that didn’t change the fact that I wanted to know more and why I recently watched the documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I knew immediately that it was something I had to see and now that I have, I was thoroughly amazed. I have a lot to discuss, so let’s delve right in.
The movie tells the true life story of actor and activist Christopher Reeve, from his role as Superman to the horse-riding accident that left him paralyzed and what he tried to do afterwards. I won’t lie, this movie was very hard to watch but it was incredible to see Christopher Reeve try to make the best out of his situation. It was also cool to see how close he was to Robin Williams and other celebrities, and how loving and supportive his family was throughout this journey. This movie was a roller coaster of emotions, even making me cry. And as I’ve made clear before, that’s not usually possible when it comes to someone like me. But what really made this movie for me though, was how much of an inspiration Christopher Reeve was and still is even after his death. As I learned, after the accident he spent the rest of his life searching for a cure for spinal cord injuries and it was really something special to see what he accomplished even in his condition. Another thing that stuck with me in this movie was the relationship between Christopher Reeve and his wife, Dana Reeve. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen and the fact that she was basically the reason why he didn’t decide to pull the plug sooner was just remarkable. Like I said before, it was amazing to see what he accomplished after the accident. That’s why it really hit me like a truck at 50 mph when I learned about the day he died and when I found out what happened to his wife. But I will say, what really lifted my spirits up was knowing that his kids are carrying on his legacy and making a difference. And it’s so nice to see what a difference Christopher Reeve has made in the world.
It was quite the experience to go deep into the life of a man who defied odds and gave people hope. I thought I knew the whole story before but as it turns out, I feel like I didn’t know anything. Christopher Reeve was one of the most magnificent human beings on this planet and it’s great to see his legacy is living on. Overall, I’d have to give this movie a perfect 10 out of 10 and I highly recommend it to everyone who watches movies just so they can witness the incredible and inspiring life story of a man who truly was Superman, both on and off the screen.
