It took me a few months, but I have finally found the time to watch Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and I have to say, It was quite an enjoyable film experience. It was a treat to see George Miller’s world make its’ presence known again. I was very much looking forward to it and have always been an action nut. There’s plenty of that to go around in this film, so if action is what you’re looking for as well, you’re in luck. The cast did an excellent job, too, especially with Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa and Chris Hemsworth as Dementus, an insane biker warlord who steals just about every scene that he’s in. If you’ve seen Mad Max: Fury Road, then I’m sure you remember the character of Furiosa. This movie is basically her origin story of how she came to be. While I do have some positives on the film, I also have some negatives as well. I’m sure someone will probably think I’m crazy for feeling this way (that might be my lack of common sense), but I do have strong opinions about this film so let’s get into that.
First off, I’ll start by saying that this movie is not Fury Road and that’s fine, but that’s also where the movie has its disadvantages. I don’t usually like to make comparisons but I think I need to do that here in order for people to understand. Fury Road’s story was simply a game of cat and mouse in the most epic and action packed way from start to finish. It was very easy to follow, but I found myself lost a few times when watching this movie. Sometimes I had a hard time figuring out what was happening and I felt like the story was dragging worse than me when I’m discussing certain topics. Second, Fury Road had fast-paced editing and cuts which kept me engaged and it helped build up the tension. In this film, there wasn’t much of that and at times, it felt slow. Also, I’m a sucker for practical effects. Fury Road was able to accomplish a lot of those and only rely on CGI when absolutely necessary. If you’re someone like me who notices a lot of minor details, you might notice that this movie relies heavily on CGI. There were times where the effects were practical so that was fun to see, but I could easily tell where the green screen was used a few times. I wish I could call this a near perfect movie but these flaws didn’t help me think that. But again, there are positives to this film, so let’s discuss those.
One thing I really loved about this movie was the world building. I got to explore more of the post-apocalyptic wasteland that I didn’t get to experience before. I even got to see places that were mentioned in Fury Road that I didn’t see so that was really cool. Like I said before, the cast did a great job. Although I did have a hard time getting invested in most of these characters, I feel like they made it work with what they got. Even though this movie does have its ups and downs, I’d still highly recommend it to anyone who’s a fan of the action genre and for that reason, I’d have to give it a 7 out of 10. But this is just the opinion of a guy with Asperger’s and I’m sure there are others who will feel differently. So, if you’re into action, thrills, and explosions, go check this one out.
