Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)

Updated: Oct 24, 2024

It took me this long to come up with something, but a few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of seeing Deadpool and Wolverine, a movie that I felt like I got genuine excitement and enjoyment out of, more so than pretending to be interested in doing something that bores the hell out of me. Aside from Inside Out 2, there has hardly been a time this year when I got to have a fun experience at the movies, so this was a nice change of pace. There has been a lot said about this movie already, but I guess I’ll still offer my take on it. So, Deadpool is actually offered to take part in the MCU, thanks to the TVA (Time Variance Authority), but things change when he has to save his universe from destruction and recruits a variant of Wolverine to help. From that point on, we experience a wild, gruesome, and bloody thrill ride. And if you’re a fan of movies like that, then this one is definitely right up your alley. Growing up, I was always a fan of Wolverine and I’ve always loved watching Hugh Jackman play this character. No matter how bad some of the X-Men films were, he always made them more bearable. And watching Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool has been a blast, too. Well, not always, if you include X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a movie that quite frankly pisses me off more than being stuck in a really awkward social situation, but that doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is the experience I had watching this movie.

Deadpool and Wolverine was also packed with cameos, and if you’ve watched any of the Fox Marvel films over the years, you’ll recognize quite a few. Maybe even more. As someone who watched most of them, it was quite a nostalgic trip for me. The jokes were top notch, too. Something that always comes in clutch when watching a Deadpool movie. There were even scenes that packed an emotional punch. I won’t spoil anything, but I will say that they delivered in the best way possible. I won’t lie, the story wasn’t anything spectacular and one of my biggest drawbacks from this movie was how it was trying to stay consistent with the MCU at times. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed watching most of the MCU movies, but honestly, it’s been a real hit or miss lately. It feels like the same repetitive formula I’ve seen before, and when it comes to someone like me, I know what repetitive is. Setting all that aside, when the film was doing its own thing and straying away from the MCU at certain points, I was having a good time. I couldn’t remember the last time I laughed my ass off so much, but this movie definitely provided a lot of chuckles, and that was good enough for me.

In this aspie film critic’s humble opinion, I would recommend this movie for anyone who grew up watching the Fox Marvel movies, as there is so many easter eggs to count and it would certainly play into the nostalgic factor. But even if you haven’t seen all of them, I’d still probably recommend it. Like I said before, the story wasn’t that astounding and this movie sure as hell works better as a standalone film. But again, it’s a wild, gruesome, and bloody thrill ride from start to finish and that is enough of a reason to see it, which is why I am giving this movie a 7 out of 10. So, if you’re up for a wild and raunchy film experience, then this is the kind of movie for you.
